Configure Door Functionality on an MR16 Module

Configure Door Functionality on an MR16 Module

1.0 Introduction

You can configure an MR16IN and an MR16OUT module with input and output door functions. For example; you can program inputs on the MR16IN to function as the door contact and the RTE inputs. You can also configure an MR16OUT output to function as a lock strike relay. This configuration can save considerable installation costs because the MR16IN and MR16OUT modules can be installed near the doors and a single RS-485 cable will then need to be run back to the controller. The following steps explain how to add an MR16IN and MR16OUT module in Borealis to a controller's port #1 and then configure the modules with a door contact, REX1 and strike functionality for the reader on port #2.

This section assumes that you have the MR16 modules wired into one of the controller's ports (such as port #1).

Notes:

  • Once an MR module has been added to a controller port that port will be configured with the Mercury protocol - therefore you will not be able to add a reader to that port. So for example; If you have an MR16IN module and an MR16OUT module both added to port 1 you will not be able to have a reader on port 1 - therefore the door functionality will need to be assigned to a reader on a different bus - for example: the reader on bus 2.
  • An MR16IN has 16 general purpose inputs but also has 2 x general purpose outputs - so, in effect, you can assign all the door functionality to an MR16IN module.

2.0 Add the MR16IN and MR16OUT Modules

The following steps explain how to add an MR16IN and an MR16OUT to the first port of an NXT-MSC controller. This section assumes that you have an NXT-MSC controller added to your Borealis system and the controller should be online. The MR16IN module will be set to address 0 and the MR16OUT module will be set to address 1.

  1. In Borealis, from the main menu select Hardware then All.

    Main menu all

  2. All controllers on the system will be displayed on the hardware tree.
  3. Expand the controller port #1.
  4. Expand the bus on the controller.
  5. Select the default reader which has been added to port #1.
  6. On the right side of the screen click the DELETE button.
  7. The default reader will be removed from the controller port.
  8. Select the port that the reader was removed from.
  9. Click the EDIT button.
  10. Set the Protocol to Mercury Security.
  11. Click the SAVE button.
  12. You will now be prompted to perform a memory reset on the controller so go ahead with this via Hardware >> Controllers - use the controller's Action menu and select Reset.
  13. Once the controller is back online following the memory reset, the controller's port will be configured for the Mercury protocol.
  14. Select the port again.
  15. Click the ADD PANEL button.

    Add Panel button

  16. From the panel select menu, select to add the MR16IN module.
  17. Click the SAVE button.
  18. The hardware tree will refresh and the MR16IN module will be added.
  19. After a few seconds the MR16IN module will shows as online.

    MR16_IN_Online

  20. Select the same port again.
  21. Click the ADD PANEL button again.
  22. This time select to add an MR16OUT module (this one will be addresses as address #1).
  23. Click the SAVE button.
  24. The hardware tree will refresh again and the MR16OUT module will be added.
  25. Select the MR16OUT and within a few seconds that too should show as online.

3.0 Unassign Door Functionality from the Controller

Before door functionality can be programmed on an MR16 module, the functionality must first be unassigned from the controller. In the following example, the door functionality will be unassigned from the controller's bus 2. An MR16IN module is added to the controller's port 1. Two of the MR16IN module's inputs will be used for the door contact and the RTE input for the reader on port 2. The MR16IN module also has 2 additional general-purpose outputs. One of these outputs will be configured as the strike output for the reader on port 2.

Notes:

  • The strike could also be assigned to an output on an MR16OUT module (connected to the same controller). You cannot use an output located on a different controller.
  • These next steps assume you have followed the steps in the previous section to add the MR16IN module to the controller (in this example, to port #1):

3.1 Unassign the door contact and the request-to-edit inputs

  1. In Borealis, click on Hardware >> All.
  2. The hardware tree will be displayed.
  3. Expand the port which has the reader connected (in this example, port #2).
  4. Expand the inputs located on that port.
  5. Select the REX input and the properties will be on the right.

    Select Door Contact

  6. Click the EDIT button on the far right of the screen.
  7. Set the input type to Monitor Point then click the SUBMIT button.

    Set to Monitor Point

  8. A line-supervision field will be displayed. By default, a monitor point input will be set to 'Normally-Closed' (the input is secured when it is closed). This setting can be changed to one of the other input types.
  9. The input will now be available in the Hardware >> Inputs list.
  10. Next, select the Rex Contact input - again the input properties will be displayed on the right.
  11. Click on the EDIT button.
  12. Again, set the input type to Monitor Point.
  13. Change the line supervision setting if you need to.
  14. Click the SUBMIT button.
  15. This second input will now be available in the Hardware >> Inputs list.

3.2 Unassign the reader's strike output.

  1. From the Hardware >> All hardware tree, expand the outputs.
  2. Select the output that appears.
  3. The output properties will be displayed on the right.
  4. Click the EDIT button.
  5. Change the output from a Strike to a Control Point.
  6. Set the pulse time for the output (this is how long the output will temporarily activate for if it is pulsed from the software).

    Set as pulse time

  7. Click the SUBMIT button.
  8. This output will now be available in the Hardware >> Outputs list.

4.0 Configure the Door Functionality on the MR16IN Module

Now that the door contact, RTE and strike have been unassigned from the controller port #2 they will become available to configure on the MR16IN module that's connected to port #1.

IMPORTANT NOTE: After configuring the inputs or outputs on an MR module for door control (door contact, REX1, REX2 or strike control) the inputs and outputs will no longer be accessible from Hardware >> Inputs and Hardware >> Outputs. To locate and edit these configured inputs and outputs you would need to go to Hardware >> All and then expand the MR module and then expand the module's inputs or outputs.

4.1 Configure the door contact input on the MR module

  1. In Borealis, click on Hardware >> Inputs on the main menu.

    Hardware Inputs

  2. The inputs on the system will be displayed - including the inputs located on the MR16IN module and the two inputs that were unassigned from the controller in section 3.1.
  3. Select the first input that you wish to configure as the door contact for the reader on port #2.

Note: You may wish to activate and then de-activate the input and then check the location in live events (to verify you are using the correct input).

  4. From the Action drop-down list on the right select EDIT.
  5. The input properties will appear.
  6. From the input type drop-down list select Door Contact.
  7. From the Linked Reader drop-down list select which reader to link the door contact to.

    DC Configured Input

  8. Click the SUBMIT button.

4.2 Configure the REX input on the MR module

  1. From the list of inputs select the input that you wish to use as the REX input.

Note: Again, you may wish to activate and then de-activate the input and then check the location in live events (to verify you are using the correct input).

  2. From the Action drop-down list on the right select EDIT.
  3. The input properties will appear.
  4. From the input type drop-down list select Rex1.
  5. From the Linked Reader drop-down list select which reader to link the door contact to.

    REX Input type

  6. Click the SUBMIT button.

4.3 Configure the strike output on the MR module

In the following steps the strike output for the reader on port 2 will be assigned to one of the outputs on the MR16IN module located on port #1.

  1. From Hardware >> All expand the MR16IN module and locate the outputs.
  2. Select the first output and then click the EDIT button on the right.
  3. Change the output's description.
  4. From the output type list select Strike.
  5. The linked reader should be the reader on port 2.
  6. Click the SUBMIT button.
  7. If access is granted from the reader on port 2 or if the reader is unlocked from the software, it will now be the relay on the MR16IN module that activates.
