Configure Door Functions on a 4x4 Module

Configure Door Functions on a 4x4 Module

1.0 Introduction

You can configure a 4x4 module with input and output door functions. For example; you can program inputs on the 4x4 to function as the door contact and the RTE inputs. You can also configure a 4x4 output as a lock strike relay. This configuration can save considerable installation costs because the 4x4 module can be installed near the door and a single RS-485 cable will then need to be run back to the controller. The following steps explain how to add a 4x4 module in Borealis and then configure the module with a door contact, RTE and strike. This section assumes that you have a 4x4 module wired into one of the controller's buses.

2.0 Add the NXT 4x4 Module

  1. In Borealis, click on Hardware >> All.
  2. The hardware tree will display.
  3. Expand the controller and select the specific bus which has the 4x4 module connected.
  4. Click the ADD 4x4 button.

  5. Confirm the prompt that appears.
  6. The 4x4 module will be added to the controller's bus.
  7. Expand the bus on the hardware tree and you will be able to select the module and view or edit the input and output properties. You can also view the status of the module.

3.0 Unassign Door Functionality from the Controller

Before door functionality can be programmed on a 4x4 module, the functionality must first be unassigned from the controller. In the following example, the door functionality will be unassigned from the controller's bus 1.
  1. In Borealis, click on Hardware >> All.
  2. The hardware tree will be displayed.
  3. Expand the bus which has the 4x4 module connected.
  4. Expand the controller inputs.
  5. Select the REX input and the properties will be on the right.

  6. Click the EDIT button on the far right of the screen.
  7. Set the input type to 'Monitor Point' then click the SUBMIT button.

  8. Repeat the same steps for the door contact input (so both inputs are programmed as monitor points).
  9. Next select the output which is on the bus.
  10. The output properties will be on the right.
  11. Click the EDIT button.
  12. Change the controller output from a strike to a control point.
  13. Set a valid pulse time if the output will later be used as a general purpose output.
  14. Click the submit button.

4.0 Configure the Door Functionality on the 4x4 Module

Now that the door contact, RTE and strike have been unassigned from the controller bus they will become available to configure on the 4x4 module.
  1. In Borealis, click on Hardware >> Inputs on the main menu.

  2. You will see the inputs that are located on the 4x4 module as well as the monitor point inputs on the controller (as set in the previous step).
  3. Place a checkmark against the input on the 4x4 that you wish to configure as the door contact.

  4. On the right-side of the screen, use the Action-drop down list and select Edit.
  5. The input edit window will appear.
  6. Enter a meaningful description for the door contact.
  7. Set the input type as Door Contact.
  8. Select the reader that the door contact will be associated with. In this example, the reader on bus 1.

  9. Click the submit button and the input will now be configured as a door contact input.
  10. Repeat steps 1-8 to configure a different input on the 4x4 as the RTE input (and selecting the same reader).
  11. Next, from the main menu, go to Hardware >> ALL.
  12. The hardware tree will display - allowing you to easily navigate to the output located on the 4x4 module.
  13. All outputs on the system will be displayed (except for those configured as strike outputs).
  14. Place a checkmark against the output on the 4x4 module that you wish to use as the strike output.
  15. Use the Actions drop-down menu and select Edit.
  16. Enter a new name for the output.
