Elevator Control - Using True Mercury Controllers

Elevator Control - Using True Mercury Controllers

1.0 Introduction

Borealis provides a cost-effective elevator control solution using NXT-MSC controllers with 4x4 modules or with MR16 modules and True Mercury controllers with MR16 modules. Elevator control

uses a reader on the controller's reader port 1 to control access to the elevator floors.

This document covers the Elevator Control setup using True Mercury controllers plus MR16IN and MR16OUT modules.

Controller and MR Modules

Notes When Using True Mercury Controllers:

  • Elevator Control is supported with the older EP controllers and the newer LP controllers.
  • All True Mercury controller types can be used for Elevator Control (this includes the MR51E and MR62E single door controllers)
  • Supported reader types are Wiegand and OSDP.
  • If using No Floor Select then only MR16OUT modules are required.

  • If using With Floor Select then MR16IN and MR16OUT modules will be required (unless you are only controlling up to 4 floors), in which case the inputs and output on the controller can be used.

  • If using With Floor select it doesn't matter whether you add the MR16IN or the MR16OUT module first as long as the controller's onboard module is configured correctly (see section 6.2)
  • The True Mercury controllers typically have 8 inputs and 4 outputs (such as the LP-1502 and LP-4502) ... this means the last 4 of the 8 inputs on the controller will activate the first 4 outputs on the first connected MR16OUT module (unlike elevator control with NXT-MSC controllers where the first input on the MR16IN will activate the first output on the MR16OUT).

2.0 Create a Facility

Before configuring the controller for elevator control you should create a facility that defines how many floors will be controlled. Typically one facility will be assigned to each elevator controller but a facility could be shared by different controllers if servicing a large number of floors. For example; the system may have total of 40 floors with floors 1 - 20 being controlled by the first controller and floors 21-40 being controlled by the second controller.

  1. From the Borealis main menu, click on Hardware >> All.

    Hardware All

  2. The hardware tree will appear on the right-side of the screen.

  3. Click on the Facilities node.
  4. On the far right side of the screen, click the ADD FACILITY button.

  5. Enter a name for the facility in the description field.
  6. Select the MSC/Mercury Site.

  7. Specify the number of floors for the facility.

    Select Facility

  8. Rename the floors (if you need to), otherwise you can leave the default names.

  9. Click the SUBMIT button to save the facility.
  10. The facility will be added to the hardware tree.

3.0 Configure the True Mercury Controller

The following steps explain how to configure an EP or LP controller for Elevator Control. All True Mercury controller types can be used for Elevator Control (this includes the MR51E and MR62E single door controllers).

Note: The following steps assume that you already have an EP or LP controller added and online. In this example the controller is an LP-1502.

  1. From the Borealis main menu click on Hardware >> Controllers.

    Main menu controllers

  2. The controller screen will appear.

  3. Click on the Actions menu on the far right side of the screen.
  4. Select change controller function.

    Change function

  5. Select Elevator Control from the Controller Function menu.
  6. The elevator control function window will be displayed.
  7. You will see there is an option to configure the controller's output manually - if this option is unchecked then all of the controller's outputs (and all the outputs for modules added to the controller will automatically be configured as elevator control outputs).

    Change Elevator Outputs

  8. Select the Facility that was setup in the previous section.

  9. Select which of the floors will be controlled by this controller.

    Select Floors

Note: There is also a 'Select All' option allowing you to quickly select all the floors in the facility.

  10. Save the controller function form.

4.0 Configure the Reader Elevator Function

The next step is configure the correct elevator reader function. There are two supported options for elevator control:

Notes: This step can be ignored if you are using No Floor Select (as that is the default setting).

No Floor Select - Only uses outputs. All outputs will activate for all floors to which a cardholder has access when they present and authenticate their credential to the elevator cab reader. So if a cardholder has total access, all outputs will change state, which, in effect, will allow any of the floor select buttons to be pressed in the cab in order to access any of the floors. When someone presents a valid credential, the floor buttons in the elevator cab will illuminate for the floors which the cardholder has access to.

With Floor Select - Does not activate any of the outputs until an input is pressed following a valid card read. Once input 1 has been pressed, output 1 will fire; input 2 will fire output 2, etc. This information is then stored in the system database so that at a later time reports can be run to see which floors cardholders have accessed. With the Floor Select option 4x4 inputs AND outputs are used and the module's inputs and outputs are paired, one input for every output. Input on the 4x4 module is automatically paired with the output 1 on the 4x4 module.

  1. From the hardware tree (Hardware >> All) expand the controller and select the elevator reader on the onboard DDM.

    Reader on DDM

  2. The reader properties will be displayed on the right.
  3. Click the Edit button.
  4. The reader properties window will appear.
  5. Enter a new description for the reader (if this is a new system)
  6. Scroll down the elevator reader properties and locate Reader Function.
  7. Set the reader function to Elevator, With Floor Select, if that is the required setting.

Reader Mode - With Floor Select

  8. Save the reader settings.

5.0 Add the MR16 Modules

This section assumes you have the required number of MR16OUT modules connected to the controller to service all elevator floors.

Note: As mentioned in the previous section: With Floor Select requires MR16IN and MR16OUT modules, whereas No Floor Select only requires you to add MR16OUT modules.

  1. From the Borealis main menu click on Hardware >> All.

    Hardware All

  2. The hardware tree will be displayed.

  3. Expand the elevator controller and then expand the TB3 bus which has the MR16 modules connected.

Note: Some Mercury controller have a TB2 and a TB3 bus.

    Select TB3

  4. On the far-right of the screen click the ADD PANEL button.

    Add Panel Button

  5. From the drop-down menu, select either an MR16IN or an MR16OUT module. When using With Floor Select it is best to add an MR16IN module first (and have this module addressed as number 1).

    Add MR Module

  6. The module will be added to the hardware tree.

  7. Expand the TB bus node and select the module you have added.
  8. The module's properties will be displayed on the right.
  9. Check that the added MR16 module is online.

    MR Module Online

  10. Expand the MR16 module to display the module's inputs or outputs.
  11. Select one of the outputs and the output properties will be displayed on the right.

  12. Because the controller has already been configured for elevator control (and with a facility assigned) you will see that the inputs are automatically configured as elevator output type.

Note: An MR16IN module is an input module but it also has two outputs. These outputs however, by default, are configured as control points and should not be used for elevator control.

  13. Repeat steps 4 - 9 to add any additional MR16IN or MR16OUT modules.

  14. If you select any of the controllers outputs (on the onboard DDM) you will see that they have also been automatically configured as elevator outputs.

6.2 Configure 'With Floor Select' Output Configuration

The controller has an 'onboard dual door module (Onboard MR52/DDM) and by default, the MR52/DDM will be configured to continue the controller inputs and outputs on the first controller that you add. However, if you are using 'With Floor Select' you will need to configure the onboard DDM to continue its outputs on the MR16OUT module.

  1. On the hardware tree select the Onboard MR52.

    Select DDM

  2. The Onboard DDM properties will appear on the right.
  3. Click the EDIT button.
  4. Scroll down the properties and locate the Continue Outputs On... setting.
  5. Set this to the first MR16 OUT module.

    MR16IN_Continue_Settings

  6. Save the Onboard DDM settings.

7.0 Setup an Elevator Access Group

Before assigning elevator access rights to credentials you must first create an elevator access group. When setting up the elevator access group you select which floors the credential will have access to and will also select a time schedule to determine when access will be granted to those floors.

  1. From the Borealis main menu click on Elevator Access Groups.
  2. On the far-right side of the screen, click on the CREATE button.
  3. Enter a name for the elevator access group in the description field.
  4. Select the MSC/Mercury site. Click NEXT.

    Elevator Group Name

  5. Place a check mark against each of the floors that will be added to the group. You will see, when using True Mercury controllers and MR16 modules, the outputs on the controller (Onboard DDM) are the first floors in the list. Click NEXT.

    Create_Group_Select_Floors

  6. Assign a time schedule to the floors (you can use the 'Assign to All' field to assign the same schedule to all the selected floors.

    Assign Schedule

  7. Click the SAVE button to save the new elevator access group.

8.0 Configure the Elevator Access Group as Access Rights

The next step is to configure the elevator access group as an access right (which can then be assigned to a credential).

  1. From the Borealis main menu, select Access Rights (located directly below Elevator Access Rights.

    Main Menu Access Rights

  2. Click the CREATE button on the far-right of the screen.

  3. Enter a description and select the MSC/Mercury site. Click NEXT.

    Elevator_Standard_Access

  4. Select the Elevator Control reader. Click NEXT.

  5. Select the elevator access group that you setup in the previous section. Click SAVE.
  6. You will now be able to assign the elevator access rights to a credential.

9.0 Assign Elevator Access Rights to a Credential

  1. From the main menu, click on Credentials.
  2. Place a check mark against the credential you wish to assign access rights.
  3. Click the EDIT ACCESS RIGHTS button.

    Select a credential

  4. Assign the elevator access rights to the credential.

    Assign_Elevator_Access

  5. Save the credential.

10.0 With Floor Select Vs No Floor Select

You will now be able to gain access to the elevator floors with the credential. As previously mention, the 'No Floor Select' option will immediately activate the outputs for the floors that can be access, whereas the 'With Floor Select' option requires the cardholder to gain access with their credential and then press the button for the floor they wish to access. No floor select will only display access granted in live events (for the elevator reader). With Floor Select will display access granted and the floor that was selected.

10.1 No Floor Select Access Event

WFS Access

10.2 With Floor Select Access

Note: In live events, you will need to enable the 'Detail' column to view the floor selection (when using 'With Floor Select'.
