KB Controller Technical Overview

KB Controller Technical Overview

1.0 Introduction

The following document provides you with an overview of the KB controller integration with Borealis. The KB controller is a 2D or 4D controller built for Borealis. As well as all the essential features you would expect from an access control system: programmable access rights, real-time event viewing, system activity reports and the ability to unlock doors from the software, KB controllers also have advanced features, such as Card + PIN, Auto Unlock Time Schedules, Lockout and Lockdown mode, I/O linkage actions (when using an additional NXT 4x4 module), ADA/DDA Extended Unlock Time.

Because Borealis is Cloud-based you can also enroll and activate/de-activate cardholders, unlock or lock any doors or even add controllers from any Smart device that has a web browser and an active internet connection.

2.0 Adding to an Existing Borealis System

KB controllers can be added to the system either via the Standard web browser access or by downloading and using the Connect app and then using the QR enroll option to add the controller by scanning the QR code printed on the controller. The QR enroll option requires you to have an available static IP address to assign to the controller. This IP address must be in the same range that the hub is addressed.

A Standard NXT Doors.NET system can also be upgraded to Borealis and from then on, any additional or replacement controllers can be the KB controllers type.

2.1 Adding to a Standard NXT System

  • KB controllers can be added to an existing Standard NXT (using the same site and hub as Standard NXT controllers). This is up to a maximum of 32 doors. An additional Standard NXT/KB hub is required for more than 32 doors.

2.2 Adding to an Existing PXL, NXT-MSC or True Mercury System

  • KB controllers can also be added to an existing PXL, NXT-MSC or True Mercury system by adding a new site and obtaining a new hub for the KB controllers.

Important Note: In Borealis, access rights are configured per site, so additional access rights would need to be set up for the additional KB controllers. If all the controllers use the same site then the cardholders only need to be assigned one access right.

2.3 Discovering the KB Hub's Assigned IP Address

Even though KB controllers do not use DHCP address assignment, the controllers will need to be assigned a static IP address that's in the same range of the hub's IP address.

The following steps explains how to find out the IP address that is assigned to the hub. The following steps assumes that the hub is online and has completed its initial update.

  1. From the Borealis main menu click on Hubs.

  2. The hub screen will display and the hub should be showing as Online.
  3. Click on the name of the hub and you will see the hub details.
  4. Make a note of the IP address that is assigned to the hub (as highlighted here, the hub's assigned IP address is 192.168.1.198) - so the address to assign the controller will need to begin 192.168.1).

  5. Click Hubs again from the main menu to return to the hub screen.

3.0 Controller Capacities

  • 2 Door/2 Reader Controller for Keri’s NXT product line
  • 4 Door/4 Reader Controller
  • 10,000 credentials
  • 1 access right per cardholder

4.0 Advanced Features

KB controllers used in Borealis will also provide you with enhanced functionality, such as:

4.1 Access Control Features

  • Card + PIN - Reader Keypads can be configured to require a valid card read followed by a unique PIN. This can also be configured to function at different times of day or night.
  • ADA/DDA/Extended Unlock - allows additional time for certain cardholders to gain access. For example, cardholders configured with extended unlock times may have an additional 30 seconds before the door re-locks or is seen by the system as 'held-open'.
  • Auto-Unlock Time Schedules - program up to xxxx unlock intervals per day.
  • First Person In (door will not unlock until an authorized cardholder gains access.
  • I/O Linkage Using NXT 4x4 Modules - An NXT 4x4 module can be connected to any bus of the KB controller and the 4x4 module provides the controller with 4 additional general purpose inputs and 4 additional general purpose outputs. These additional inputs and outputs can be configured with actions (configure an input, or group of inputs to activate an output). The output will follow the input status, be activated for a specified amount of time or will be latched.

4.2 Borealis Features

  • Block Enrollment - Allows for a sequential block of cardholders to be quickly and easily enrolled into the system.
  • Presentation Enrollment - Any readers on the system can be used as an enrollment reader. Simply present a new credential to a reader then go into Presentation Enrollment mode to enroll the card information into the system.
  • Lockout or Lockdown any Doors - As well as being able to lock or unlock any door on the system you can also select any door and put it into Lockout or Lockdown - All cardholders will then be denied access at the reader.
  • Site Lock and Site Unlock - Coming Soon - Gives you the ability to immediately unlock all doors on a site via the click of a button. Borealis also allows you to immediately put all readers on a site into Lock mode (all unlocked doors will immediately lock), or Site Lockout (cardholders will not be granted access but the RTE will still be active) or Site Lockdown (cardholders will not be able to gain access and the RTE will also be inactive).
  • Supervised NXT Readers - The NXT Series readers are 'fully supervised' - so the reader will immediately display in Borealis as offline if the reader cable is severed or disconnected from the controller.
  • Readers can be paired - One reader can be configured as a primary reader and a second reader can be configured as a secondary reader. Both readers will activate the same lock output but are viewed and programmed separately in Borealis. Note: This configuration will require a 2-door controller to control a single door.
  • Borealis Connect App - Use the accompanying Connect app to quickly and easily add KB controllers to Borealis by scanning the QR code that's printed on the controller. The Connect app will also allow you to lock unlock doors, activate and de-activate cardholders and monitor inputs and activate outputs.
  • Hub and Controller Status - Borealis will display if a hub or controller has gone offline.

5.0 Reader Compatibility

   MS3000X

The controller is compatible with the NXT Series readers (NXT-1R/3R/5R) or with the addition of a low-cost reader interface module (RM3) you can also use Keri MS readers or Wiegand readers and keypads.

Note:

  • NXT Exit readers are not compatible with KB controllers.
  • OSDP readers are not compatible with KB controllers.

6.0 Supports 4x4 Modules for I/O Control

Additionally, the KB controllers also function with the NXT 4x4 modules. Each controller bus allows one 4x4 module to be added and each module provides 4 additional inputs and 4 additional outputs. The inputs on the 4x4 modules can also be used for door functionality (such as: door contact and RTE inputs and door strike outputs) or the inputs can be used as general monitor points or for monitoring doors which are not access controlled. The 4x4 module also allows you to program inputs to activate and de-activate outputs (follow, pulse or latch functions).

Note:

  • Mercury MR16 Modules are not compatible with KB controllers.

Notes

  • The KB controller is designed to function in Borealis and is not compatible with other Keri software, such as Doors.NET or Visual Doors.
  • The KB controller is an entry-level controller but provides full access control functionality plus additional advanced features such as Card + PIN, Extended Unlock Time, Auto-Unlock time schedules, Holidays, programmable access rights plus a multitude of features built into Borealis. Such as: the ability to lock or unlock doors from the software or immediately put doors into Lockour or Lockdown, view system events as they occur, run reports.
  • The KB controller has the same PCB layout as the NXT-MSC controllers. The RTE, door contact inputs and the door output relay and readers connections are all the same.
  • Controllers are added to Borealis using the Scan feature or they can also be added using the Borealis Connect app.
  • Like Standard NXT controllers, the controller requires a static IP address. The KB controllers are not assigned a DHCP address.
  • KB controllers can be added to an existing Standard NXT controller system. So there's no need to purchase a separate hub for the KB controllers.
  • KB controllers cannot be used for Elevator Control.
  • KB controllers cannot be used for Automation Control.
