NXT-MSC - Assign a Static IP Address Using Internet Explorer

NXT-MSC - Assign a Static IP Address Using Internet Explorer

1.0 Introduction

There may be a situation, where it is not possible to gain access to the Doors.NET client PC/or the system administrator account during system configuration.
If you need to configure an NXT-MSC controller this can be done using Internet Explorer (using the browser's default security settings).

Notes:
* The following steps require you to know the controller's current IP address.
* You will need to be physically near to the controller (as the white S1 button will need to be pressed twice before they can log in using the controller's default user name and password). Once logged-in, you should add a new user name and password (which, in the future, will bypass the enhanced authentication).

2.0 Download Internet Explorer

The most current version of Internet Explorer can be downloaded here:

3.0 Install Internet Explorer

  1. Navigate to the downloads folder on your PC.
  2. Double-click the Internet Explorer installer .exe file.

  3. Click the INSTALL button to proceed with the installation.
  4. The installation should take no longer than a few seconds to complete.
  5. You will then be prompted to reboot the PC so click restart now (or restart later.

4.0 Run Internet Explorer 11

  1. Press the Windows Key + R to open the Run command.
  2. Type in iexplore to open Internet Explorer.

5.0 Log Into the NXT-MSC Controller

  1. In the IE 11 address field, enter the controller's known IP address.
  2. You will see a message stating the site is not secure, click on the More Information link and then click Go on to the webpage (not recommended).
  3. Click on Click Here to Login to display the login window.

  4. The log in window will appear... at this point you should locate the controller and press the small, white S1 button twice (this will enable you to log into the controller with the default user name and password (admin/password) - the default login account will be active for 5 minutes.

Note: When you press the white S1 button, ensure there is a jumper across both pins of J3.

  5. Enter admin as the username and password as the password.
  6. Click the LOGIN button.
  7. You will see a message that no user account has been setup. Keri advises setting up a new user account as this will bypass the need to press the controller's S1 button in the future (you will not physically need to be near the controller). Click on the Users link on the left to add a new user account for the controller.

6.0 Assign the NXT-MSC Controller a Static IP Address

  1. Click the Network link on the left.
  2. Select Use Static IP configuration (by default the controller is set to DHCP configuration).
  3. In the IP Address field, enter the static IP address you wish to assign the controller.

  4. Enter a new gateway IP address (if the controller is going to be on a different subnet).
  5. Click the ACCEPT button.
  6. The network page will refresh.
  7. Finally, click on the Apply Settings link on the left - then click on the APPLY SETTINGS, REBOOT button.

  8. If you have access to the Doors.NET software, select the MSC gateway on the hardware tree and perform a scan (after the controller has rebooted) ... the controller should then be displaying its new IP, static address.

  9. You will not need to enter the new IP address into the controller properties, or restart the MSC gateway to get the controller back online. It should show online again after a minute or so.
