P-640H/P-620H Reader/Keypad Setup Guide

P-640H/P-620H Reader/Keypad Setup Guide

1.0 Introduction

The following document explains how to setup a P-640H or the P-620H keypad in the Doors.NET software and then goes on to explain some basic reader configuration. The P-640H/P620H connects to a Standard NXT or NXT-MSC controller via a Reader Interface Module (RIM). The keypad can be configured for card-only or requiring an access credential and a PIN.

P-640H (3 x 4 key form factor)

P-620H (2 x 6 key form factor)

Notes:
- When using the NXT-MSC controller types the P-640H/P-620H offers PIN only mode, Card + PIN and Card OR PIN modes. Standard NXT controllers support Card-only or Card + PIN modes.
- The P-640H/P-620H keypad reads Farpointe and HID credentials. It is
not compatible with NXT formatted cards and fobs. The equivalent keypads for NXT-credentials is the NXT-6RK (identical to the P-640H) and the NXT-6RKM (M for mullion) - which is identical to the P-620H.

This document assumes that the keypad has already been installed and is connected to a controller via a RIM (Reader Interface Module). Refer to the P-640H/P-620H installation guide for a wiring diagram and installation instructions.

2.0 Keypad Data

The keypad data is transmitted via the reader's data lines is either 8-Bit Burst or 26-Bit Wiegand data format.

Note: When using NXT-MSC controller types you MUST ensure the keypad is set to output the PIN in 8-Bit Burst. Configuring the keypad data format is done using a control card that is sent with the reader.

2.1 Configuring the Keypad for 8-Bit Burst

  1. Down-power the P-640H/P-620H.
  2. Locate the keypad data control card that is shipped with the reader.
  3. Power-up the P-640H/P-620H - the reader will beep.
  4. Present the control card within 10 seconds - the reader will beep twice when the card is presented.
  5. Press the # twice to exit programming.
  6. The P-640H/P-620H will now be programmed for 8-Bit Burst.

3.0 Verify the Reader is Online

  1. The following steps explain how to verify in the Doors.NET software that the reader is online.
  2. In Doors.NET, go to Setup >> Hardware Setup >> All - to display the hardware tree.
  3. Expand the controller to locate the reader on the hardware tree.
  4. Select the reader and the reader properties will be on the right.
  5. Ensure Advanced View is enabled for the reader properties.

  6. At the top of the property grid, look for the firmware version (It should be either vRIM 3.3.21 or vRIM 3.3.10).

4.0 Set the Correct Manufacturer Model

Setting the correct manufacturer model in the reader properties ensures that all the supported reader modes become available for that reader.
  1. With the reader highlighted, the properties will be visible on the right-side of the screen.
  2. In the reader properties locate the Manufacturer Model. From the drop-down list, select Farpointe Keri P-640H.

Note: The default manufacturer model when using NXT-MSC controllers is NXT-3R.

  3. Save the reader settings.

5.0 Configure the P-640H/P-620H for Card + PIN

5.1 Using NXT-MSC Controllers

When the correct manufacturer model is set, you will then have the option of setting the reader to Card + PIN mode. The following steps explain how to set this up in Doors.NET and it assumes you already have (or will have) cardholders enrolled on the system with PINs assigned.
  1. In the Doors.NET software, open the hardware tree.
  2. Select the controller which has the P-640H/P-620H keypad connected.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the controller properties and locate the memory options.
  4. Set the PIN digits value to the length of PINs that are assigned to the cardholders.

Note: When using the NXT-MSC controllers, cardholders cannot have PINs that exceed this PIN digit length, however, they can have shorter PINs (by entering the shorter PIN and then pressing the # key on the keypad).

  5. When the PIN digit value has been set, save the controller settings.
  6. Next, select the P-640H/P-620H keypad on the hardware tree - the keypad properties will be on the right.
  7. Locate the Modes setting. Set the Default Online Mode to Card + PIN - This will ensure the P-640H/P-620H is always expecting a PIN to be entered either before, or after a valid card read. The P-640H/P-620H will also remain in this mode is the controller goes offline or loses power.

  8. Save the P-640H/P-620H reader settings.
  9. The next valid card presentation will require a valid PIN to also be entered (as long as the cardholder is not configured as PIN exempt).

6.0 Changing the P-640H/P-620H Reader Mode

You can use the reader command button (located on the ribbon bar) to immediately change the reader's operating mode.

6.1 Set the P-640H/P-620H to Card-Only

  1. Select the P-640H/P-620H on the hardware tree.
  2. From the ribbon bar near the top of the screen, click on Lock.

  3. The reader will now be in Card-Only mode. You will also see an event in live events indicating that the reader mode has changed.
  4. The P-640H/P-620H will remain in card-only mode until the mode has been manually changed (or if the controller goes offline, loses power or has a memory reset) - due to the Default Online Mode setting made in the previous section.

6.2 Set the P-640H/P-620H to Card + PIN Mode

  1. Select the P-640H/P-620H on the hardware tree.
  2. From the ribbon bar near the top of the screen, click on Card + PIN.
  3. The reader will now be in Card + PIN mode. You will also see an event in live events indicating that the reader mode has changed.

  4. The P-640H/P620H will remain in card-only mode until the mode has been manually changed.

6.3 Set the P-640H/P-620H to PIN-Only

Notes:
  1. The PIN-Only mode is only supported on NXT-MSC Controllers.
  2. If the controller loses power or goes offline, the reader will go to its Default Online Mode when the controller is powered back-up or comes back online.
  1. Select the P-640H/P-620H on the hardware tree.
  2. From the ribbon bar near the top of the screen, click on the PIN Only icon.

  3. The P-640H/P620H will immediately go to PIN-Only mode.
