NXT Port Link Module - Installation Guide

NXT Port Link Module - Installation Guide

1.0 Introduction

The special purpose NXT Port Link is designed for use without an NXT or NXT-MSC controller and its main function is to pass-through 64-bit NXT credential data to a third-party controller.

The NXT Port Link module typically connects directly onto an NXT 4x4 module and an NXT reader is wired into the power and RS-485 bus of the 4x4 module, and is constantly polled. Any compatible 125KHz HID or NXT credential presented to the NXT reader will have the credential data passed-through and sent through the Wiegand outputs of the NXT Port Link to a third-party access control panel.

The Port Link module also has a Wiegand IN input (pins 7 and 8) for connecting a Wiegand keypad, such as the NXT-6RK-H variant - for transmitting standard Wiegand data.

Notes:
  1. When using the NXT reader option, the LED on the NXT reader will not change state when access is granted - as the access control decision-making is being performed by the third-party controller.
  2. The NXT Port Link only supports NXT Entry readers it does not support NXT Exit (NXT-1RE/NXT-3RE/NXT-5RE) readers.

3.0 NXT Port Link Configuration

The NXT Port Link must be configured for NXT-6RK combo (D6 is amber and D1 is red) to enable the decrypt feature. Regardless of whether you are connecting an NXT reader or an NXT-6RK keypad:

3.1 NXT Port Link Configuration Procedure

If the NXT Port Link is not configured as defined in the above diagram, perform the following steps:
  1. Hold down both the white SW1 and SW2 buttons.
  2. All seven LEDs on the Port Link module will flash three times.
  3. Release both SW1 and SW2, and the module is now in configuration mode.
  4. Press the SW1 button to step through the reader type selection.
  5. Release SW1 when D6 is solid amber.
  6. Press SW2 and the reader type is now set.
  7. Press SW1 to select the LED mode - ensure D1 is set to solid red.
  8. Hold down SW2 and then hold down SW1. All LEDs will blink again 3 times and the Port Link module will then be correctly programmed.

4.0 Hardware Setup Procedure - NXT Reader

The following steps explain how to use an NXT reader to pass the 64-bit Wiegand data from a presented credential to a third-party access control panel:

Notes:

  1. The NXT reader required cable type is as follows:

  1. The NXT reader shield drain (the metal wire) should be properly grounded. If connecting to an NXT 4x4 module the shield drain can be connected to the ground lug on the 4x4 module labelled J24.

4.1 Using an NXT 4x4 Module

  1. Connect the NXT Port Link module to the NXT 4x4 module using the three sockets and standoff jacks on the 4x4 PCB.
    Notes:
The 4x4 module is for mounting and supplying power to the Port Link module.

  2. Connect the NXT reader to the 4-pin terminal block of the NXT 4x4 module.
  3. Apply 12VDC power and ground to the 4-pin terminal block (pins 1 and 2).

  4. On the Port Link module, the LED labelled D6 will be solid amber, the LED labelled D5 will be slowly blinking green. On the opposite bank of LEDs, the LED labelled D1 will be solid red.
  5. Connect Wiegand Data 0 between pin 2 of the Port Link and Data 0 of the third-party controller.
  6. Connect Wiegand Data 1 between pin 3 of the Port Link and Data 1 of the third-party controller.
  7. Connect GND between pin 6 of the Port Link and reader GND of the third-party controller.

  8. The D8 comms LED will be solid red when the reader is online.
  9. When everything is connected the hardware wiring should be as follows.

It is also possible to connect an NXT reader directly to the NXT Port Link module. The header is a 4 pin x 2 level 0.100 pitch, (2.54mm). This option requires the installer to source an appropriate connector for the NXT reader and the Port Link module must have a 12VDC power-supply connected to pin 5 (12VDC) and pin 6 (GND) of the J4 connector.

The following diagrams show the Port Link module wiring for this configuration option and the pin-outs for the NXT reader to the underside of the Port Link module.

NXT Reader Wiring

Notes:
  1. The amber LED on the NXT reader will blink once every 10 seconds to indicate that the reader is online with the Port Link module.
  2. The amber LED on the NXT module will also blink and the reader will beep when a compatible credential is presented to the reader.
  3. There is no LED control when a valid credential is presented. The LED on the NXT will always display amber.

5.0 Hardware Setup Procedure - NXT 6RK Keypad

You also have the option of connecting an NXT-6RK keypad to the Wiegand IN connectors of the Port Link module (pins 7 and 8 for Data 0 and Data 1) and pins 5 and 6 for +12VDC and GND. The reader's LED and beeper wires should be connected to the third-party controller. As the LED is connected to the third-party access control panel the LED color will then change state when a valid credential is granted access.

5.1 NXT-6RK Wiring Information

Notes:
  1. The NXT-6RK's beeper (blue wire) and LED (brown wire) connects to external Wiegand access control panel (not to the NXT Port Link).
  2. The NXT-6RK +12VDC (red) is wired into pin 5 of the Port Link module.
  3. The NXT-6RK GND (black) is wired into pin 6 of the Port Link module.
  4. The NXT-6RK Data 0 (green) is wired into pin 7 of the Port Link module.
  5. The NXT-6RK Data 1 (white) is wired into pin 8 of the Port Link module.
  6. Pin 2 of the Port Link module is wired to Data 0 of the third-party access control panel.
  7. Pin 3 of the Port Link module is wired to Data 1 of the third-party access control panel.
  8. PIN 6 (GND) is wired to GND of the third-party access control panel.

5.2 NXT-6RK Wiring Schematic

- NXT-6RK keypad will beep on card presentation.
- The LED will be controlled by the external access control panel.
