KB Controller Setup Guide

KB Controller Setup Guide

1.0 Introduction

The following document explains how to setup a KB 2 door or 4 door controller in Borealis. It assumes that the controller will be added to an existing, active Borealis system and the KB controller should be added to the same network that the Borealis hub is connected to.

Notes:

  • The KB controller is only supported in Borealis. KB controllers cannot be used in Doors.NET.
  • KB controllers do not support DHCP address assignment. Once KB controllers have been added to Borealis they should be assigned a static IP address in the same range that the hub is set to.

2.0 Factory Reset the KB controller

Before adding a KB controller to Borealis it is good practice to perform a factory reset on the controller. This is particularly important if the controller has been moved to a different physical location or is being deployed from a different Borealis system. A factory reset will clear any programmed IP address and configuration.

  1. Remove power from the KB controller.
  2. Ensure a jumper is across the J3 pins. The jumper can remain on J3 at all times.
  3. Press the S1 switch and hold it down while applying power. Keep the button pressed until the Reset LED (D48) is lit.
  4. This indicates the reset routine has begun. Once the LED is lit, the button can be released.
  5. DO NOT REMOVE POWER FROM THE KB CONTROLLER WHILE THE RESET LED IS LIT.
  6. The Reset is complete when the Reset LED goes off.

3.0 Create a KB Site in Borealis

The next step is to create a KB site in Borealis. A KB site will support KB and Standard NXT controllers and both controller types can co-exist in the same Borealis system. This section assumes you will be adding the KB/NXT site to a new Borealis system that has recently been setup:

  1. Open a web browser and in the address field, enter: keri.aetheros.net
  2. Log in to Borealis with your registered user name (email) and password.
  3. On the main menu on the left click on Sites.

  4. The Sites screen will appear.
  5. Click the CREATE button in the upper-right.
  6. Enter a new site name.
  7. Enter a contact name.
  8. Enter a contact phone number.
  9. From the Hardware Type menu, select Keri Standard NXT and Borealis KB Controllers.
  10. Search for, or select the country that the controller is installed.
  11. Select the State, if you are based in the United States.
  12. Enter your ZIP/Postal code
  13. Select the world timezone associated with the selected country.

Note: the KB controller's will get their time and date stamp from the world timezone selected for the site. It is therefore important that the selected timezone reflects where the controller is physically located.

  14. Place a checkmark in the Enable Keypads if combination reader/keypads will be used on the site. For example; an NXT-6RK keypad.
  15. Click the SUBMIT button to create the new site.

4.0 Claim a Hub to the KB Site

Once the site has been setup you can then claim a hub to the site. Because the site has been setup to support Standard NXT and KB controllers the hub will automatically be configured for these controller types when the hub is claimed.

To claim the hub you will need the unique GUID and PIN that should have been e-mailed to you or it is also printed on the exterior of the hub.

Notes:

  • A hub configured for KB will ONLY support the Standard NXT and Borealis KB controller types.
  • A hub will support up to 32 doors.
  • If your system consists of more than 32 Keri NXT or KB doors then multiple hubs will be required.
  • The hub must be added to a DHCP network with an active, unrestricted internet connection.
  • The following steps assume that you have followed the instructions for setting up the hub (powering-up the hub and adding it to a DHCP network).

  1. From the Borealis main menu, click on Hubs.

  2. Click the CREATE button in the upper-right.

  3. The create hub form will appear.
  4. Enter a name for the hub.

  5. Enter the hub GUID (this will be printed on the outside of the hub).

  6. Enter the hub PIN (this too will be printed on the outside of the hub).
  7. Select the KB site to assign to the hub.

  8. Click the SAVE button.

  9. Initially, the hub will show as offline.
  10. After a few seconds the hub status will display: 'Updating Started'.

  11. Please allow 3-5 minutes for the hub to receive its initial update.

  12. When the hub is updated, the status will display 'Update Completed'.

  13. Once the hub status is Online and updated, it is ready to use and you can now add controllers to the hub.

  14. To verify that the hub is fully updated, click on the hub name and the hub details screen will appear. The hub details screen will display time and date stamps of when the controller received its initial update.

5.0 Add a KB Controller via Scan

  1. From the main menu, click on Hubs.

  2. Your hub will appear in the list.

  3. Locate the Actions drop-down menu on the right, click the down-arrow and select Scan, or click the SCAN button.

  4. The scan function will scan the local network for KB controllers.

  5. After a few seconds, controllers will be displayed.

  6. Place a check mark against the controllers that you wish to claim.

  7. Enter a name for each of the controllers that you wish to add.
  8. Then enter the static IP address you wish to assign the controller(s).

  9. Click the CLAIM button.

  10. At the top of the screen you should see a message stating that the controller has been successfully claimed.

  11. Go to Hardware >> Controllers and the new controllers will be listed.
  12. Initially you will see that the controllers have a status of Unknown.

  13. Please wait 1-2 minutes for KB controllers to come online.
  14. Once the status displays as online, the controllers are ready for use and further configuration.

Important Note: Once the controller is online, it is advisable to open live events to check if the controller requires a firmware upgrade.
