Hardware Installation Guide

1.0 Introduction

This document provides wiring diagrams, installation recommendations and further hardware information for the Intelliprox Blue controller.

2.2 Fail-Safe Lock Wiring

A fail-safe locking device requires power to keep a door secure. An example of a fail-safe device is a maglock. If power is lost at the lock the door will unlock. To power the lock via the controller's power supply you should ensure that the lock draws a maximum of 1 amp, otherwise the lock should have its own external power supply (separate from the controller's power-supply).

Fail Safe Lock Wiring

Note:the 1.5KE39C transorb is provided with the Intelliprox Blue ship kit. It should be installed as close as possible to the locking device to prevent transients from the lock affecting controller operation.

2.3 Fail Secure Lock Wiring

A fail-secure locking device requires power to unlock the door. If power is lost at the lock the door will remain locked. To power the lock via the controller's power supply you should ensure that the lock draws a maximum of 1 amp, otherwise the lock should have its own external power supply (separate from the controller's power-supply).

Note: The 1.5KE39C transorb is provided with the Intelliprox Blue ship kit. It should be installed as close as possible to the locking device to prevent transients from the lock affecting controller operation.

3.0 Cable Requirements

3.1 RS-485 Cable Requirements

RS-485 bus runs can daisy-chain together an NXT-4x4 and NXT-Reader on one line. The total cable run distance should be no more than 500 feet from the Intelliprox Blue controller for runs with 4x4s and no more than 1,000 feet for reader-only runs.

  1. To meet CE and C-tick regulations, the length of the controller power line can be no longer than 3 Meters (9.85 feet).
  2. Use the shortest possible path from earth ground point to PCB. Connect the earth ground only to the designated pin on the terminal block. This is important as all transient protection for the unit is made through this earth ground connection. For unit protection, the earth ground connection should always be made first.
  3. Values listed are minimums. Individual input and output devices may have more specific requirements.

Notes:
  1. The Lock Output relay may require a heavier gauge of wire depending upon the current demands of the lock and the length of the lock wiring run.
  2. Cable resistance causes a drop in voltage at the end of long cable runs. Ensure the appropriate power and current for your device is available at the device at the end of the cable run. Heavier gauge cable reduces this effect.
  3. Keri does not recommend hot-plugging a Reader, RIM, or 4x4 into an Intelliprox Blue controller. Remove power from the controller prior to connecting these devices.

4.0 Installation Recommendations

  • Mount controllers in environmentally suitable areas - they require protection from weather and from temperature/humidity extremes
  • If not using a KPS power supply, mount the controller at least 3 feet away from the controller's power supply to prevent EMI radiated from the power supply from affecting the controller
  • Use the enclosure as a mounting template to mark drilling holes for permanent mounting
  • Route cables in accessible areas for ease of maintenance
  • Connect the controller to a quality earth ground
  • Add transient suppression across electric devices attached to a controller output
  • For a single door application, install the NXT-1R, NXT-3R or NXT-5R reader. For 2-door applications, install the standard reader plus the NXT-RE (exit reader).

6.0 Factory Reset Procedure

Before setting up the controller you will need to perform a factory reset:

  1. Down-power the controller.
  2. Ensure the jumper is across both pins of the P2 jumper
  3. Hold down the orange reset button (K2) as you apply the power.

    Reset button and jumper

  4. Continue to hold down the K2 button for 20 seconds.
  5. You will notice the green DS1 LED go off then on.
  6. Release your finger from the K2 button. The DS4 and DS5 LEDs next to the reader port will come on. The controller is now reset and ready to setup.
