Operator Role Definitions

Operator Role Definitions

The following document explains what each of the default operator roles are in Borealis.

A system has five operator roles but more roles can be added by a System Owner or Super user.

Note: The definitions below summarize the purpose of each of the default operator roles. However a System Owner and a Super user can edit any of the operator roles (except for the Owner role). For example, you may wish to enable all general administrative permissions for the Installer role.

System Owner

The System Owner is typically the person who initially set the up the system and this is the only operator who can make subscription payments using either account credit or a credit card.  When a System Owner logs into Borealis they will also see the Subscription menu item which no other operator role has access to.

The subscription screen displays information about the system subscription as well as billing history. The System Owner will receive invoices via e-mail as well as renewal notifications. The Owner can however, add additional e-mail recipients for payment related e-mails.

Each system only has one Owner but the Owner can transfer ownership to a different operator.

Additionally, being the System Owner allows the operator to perform any administrative task that is available in Borealis, such as adding and configuring hardware, enrolling cardholders and credentials, creating and assigning access rights and running reports.

The System Owner role cannot be edited.

Super

The Super role is typically used by the person responsible for administration of the entire system and all sites. This role also has the rights to perform any administrative task in Borealis except for being able to make subscription payments or view the Subscriptions screen. The Super role allows a user to add new operators and operator roles and edit existing operator roles (except for the System Owner role).

If the person installing the system will also be assisting with cardholder and credential enrollment and creating and assigning access rights you should consider assigning the operator the Super role or editing the Installer role.

Installer

Typically an installer role will be assigned to someone who is responsible for adding, configuring and editing the hardware. However, as is the case with
the Super role the Installer does not have permission to pay for hardware. Once added to the system, hardware will still need to be paid for by the Owner.

As well as being able to add and configure hardware, the installer can also create and edit Automation Rules, create and edit Custom Credential formats, create and edit Elevator Control settings, update controller firmware and configure and edit general purpose inputs and outputs. Essentially any task related to setting up the access control hardware.

Operators Manager

An Operators Manager is a very limited role, by default and the main purpose of this role is for basic editing of operators and being able to delete existing operators. The Operators Manager cannot edit or create operator roles and they cannot change the role that is assigned to other operators. Additionally, the Operators Manager can also enroll cardholders and credentials, create and assign access rights, create and assign holidays and schedules and run reports on system activity.

Sites Manager

The Sites Manager role is the most limited operator role. By default only has the ability to add new sites and view, update or delete existing sites. All other operator role permissions for the Sites Manager are not enabled or displayed. When someone is assigned the Sites Manager role when they log into Borealis the only visible menu item will be sites. The only additional function they can perform is setting up the Site Lock and Site Unlock feature.
